If you are using a MySQL Database on your Web Hosting Server, then you may need to backup the database from time to time or may need a backup to restore it to another Web Hosting Account. PHPMyAdmin is the most popular web based MySQL Database management tool which is usually available in all popular Hosting Control Panels like cPanel, Parallels Plesk, WebsitePanel etc. To take the backup, you need to use the "Export" tool within PHPMyAdmin to generate an SQL Script of your database. So first step is to open PHPMyAdmin which is either available as a separate option in the Hosting Control Panel (like under Databases section in cPanel) or launched via "Webadmin" or "Browse Database" link next to your MySQL Database name in the list of Databases (like in Parallels Plesk, WebsitePanel). Once PHPMyAdmin is open, make sure that the Database you want to backup is selected and its name appears in the top bar of PHPMyAdmin. If it is not selected, then select from the Left Sidebar. Then click on the "Export" menu in top horizontal toolbar. From the Export page, you can set several options before exporting the SQL Script. For instance, you can export All or Selected Tables, you can choose format of the exported file & also choose to compress the script before download (useful in case of large database), Add Drop Statement to the script (useful if you want to overwrite tables when importing to an existing database) and many more. Choose the settings appropriate for your case and finally click on the "Go" button at the bottom. This will generate an SQL Script of your Database and start the Download in your web browser. Time taken to generate the backup and start of download as well as time taken to download may depend on the size of your database. Some Hosting Control Panels also have separate options to take backup of MySQL Database from within the Control Panel. For example, in case of Linux Web Hosting cPanel Account, you will find a Direct Download link of your database under "Backups" section. To Backup MySQL Database from Windows Web Hosting WebsitePanel Account, follow below steps i. Login to your WebsitePanel account. ii. From the large "Database" icon click on the "MySQL 5.x" option to open the list of your databases list. iii. Click on the name of the Database you want to Backup for to open the settings page. Here on the settings page, you will find an option below labeled "Maintenance Tools". Click on it to view the "Backup" button. iv. Click on the Backup button. From this page, you can download the .SQL Script backup file of your database to your local computer. Please note that if the backup gets downloaded in .zip format then you can extract the zip file on your local computer to retrieve the .sql file. It is always recommended that you periodically maintain backups of your databases with you.
